Hopeful and Excited

I have been consumed with all things inaugural this week. It was almost like Christmas was coming! I woke up Tuesday when my alarm went off early and actually got out of bed and went to the gym, because I was thinking "Today is inauguration day!" I was so excited. I watched about 4 hours of coverage that morning. At the gym, I watched the Obama's leaving the church service and going to the White House to have coffee with the Bush's. When I got home, I watched the entire inauguration, plus most of the commentary afterwards. I watched the Obama's walk the outgoing President to his helicopter. Today I watched all of my recorded coverage from last night's inaugural balls. Why am I so fascinated with all of this?

I voted for Obama and I believe in him. I don't agree with all of his policies. I don't think he is the answer to every problem our country has. However, I do feel optimistic about the future of our country with him at the helm. I felt honored to be a part of such a historic event in our history. I am grateful that every child in America now knows that it is a possibility for anyone, regardless of color, to serve in the highest position in the country. I was near tears the whole day yesterday, thinking of what his election means to so many people.

Oh, and I love the way he respects his wife! Did anyone else notice how they looked at each other during their dances last night? He always opens the door for her. At one of the balls, he said to the crowd "Isn't my wife good looking?" Just another reason I'm feelin' the Obama love.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

haha, I'm kidding. Just making fun of you. Obama will be great, I can't wait to see what he is able to accomplish.

I heard Todd groaning every 5 minutes as we watched it, so I am not sure I had quite the same experience as you ;) I am very excited to see what he does for our country though.
BTW...I loved what a Mama Bear you were in your last post! And yes, I will for sure call you next time we are in Boise.

America needs a change. We had Obama carved jack 0'lanterns at our house this Halloween. I hope he doesn't let us down. I, too, am hopeful. And I loved watching the coverage as well. Time will tell us if we made the right choice.

So although I tend to vote Republican, and I did vote for McCain, I get why people are so excited about Obama. It IS kind of a big deal that he is African-American. Not because people should be focused on that, but the very fact that it demonstrates how the bigotry and prejudice that was once prevalent in this country is no longer such an issue. Admittedly, it is probably not eliminated altogether, but it is greatly reduced; and that makes me proud to be an American all over again.

Also, I LOVE that people care about politics again. I'm not one to debate issues back and forth, but I do like it when people care. One of the great tragedies of living in one of the most wealthy and powerful countries in the world is when a majority of its citizens are apathetic to the government and pretty much anything that doesn't immediately affect them. So I am grateful that this past election has re-ignited the civic spark in so many of my fellow citizens and that they care again about who our President is and what he stands for. They may not agree with him, but they are paying attention enough to have an opinion at least.

No matter what Obama does as president, I at least appreciate the breath of fresh air that his prescense has brought to a rather stale political scene. I hope he can live up to our expectations!

I have been disappointed by Obama's first few days in office (closing Gitmo and funding abortions), but maybe the next 1500days or so will be better.

I do appreciate his relationship with his wife.
